We’ve all experienced that special scent in the air after a rain shower. You might have heard it referred to as petrichor – a term coined by two scientists from Australia in 1965. It’s derived from Greek words meaning “stone” and “flowing of water.” But what does petrichor actually smell like?
It’s a mix of fragrances, including damp earth and air. It brings to mind a fresh spring day with wet grass and soil after a rain shower. This unique scent is caused by geosmin, an organic compound produced by soils. When the ground is dry for an extended period of time, geosmin is released as soon as the rain begins to fall.
Petrichor has been described in many different ways – from “the smell of summer rain” to “damp earth and leaves.” It can also have a sweet, musky aroma or even a hint of ozone! These aromas are often associated with memories of cozy times spent inside while it’s raining outside.
Researchers have studied the phenomenon of petrichor for decades and have identified several different compounds that give rain its distinct smell. One of these is geosmin, which gives off an earthy aroma as mentioned earlier. Another compound is a-pinene, which has a sweet, citrusy scent that’s reminiscent of evergreens. Other compounds found in petrichor are linalool, which smells like flowers, and ozone, which has a sharp smell. Together, these fragrances create the unique aroma of rain that we all know and love.
