How to Prevent and Fix a Short Candle Wick

Cautious pet owners are often apprehensive when it comes to candle safety around their furry companions. Will the fragrance of a burning candle affect your pup? What if they take a bite out of one? Rest assured, both scenarios can be avoided with proper supervision and precautionary measures.
These are certainly understandable worries, and the answers depend on what type and quality of candles you purchase. To begin with, let us look at the aroma of each candle.
No, scented candles are not toxic; however, they can contain ingredients that may be harmful to pets if ingested. You should always look for pet-safe candles with labels stating the all-natural or organic ingredients used. These types of candles also generally avoid synthetic fragrances, which can cause skin and respiratory irritation.
Thankfully, the majority of contemporary candles produce virtually no dangerous gases or smoke. Additionally, you can amplify your protection by taking precautionary steps such as using a candle snuffer to extinguish flames rather than blowing them out. If possible, opt for organic waxes like beeswax and soy over paraffin which generates more hazardous fumes when lit.
The ingredients in candles can vary depending on the manufacturer. Candles may contain paraffin, as well as other materials such as lead and zinc that are toxic when inhaled or ingested by pets. To ensure your pet’s safety, opt for soy-based wax candles which are considered to be the safest option.
Be mindful of its location, and use common sense. As long as you’re vigilant with proper supervision and protection, candles can provide a special atmosphere to your home without putting your pup at risk. With the right precautions, you can enjoy the calming glow of candlelight while keeping your pet safe and sound.

Beeswax candles are my favorite choice. Natural soy wax and any other 100% plant or vegetable waxes are also top recommendations when it comes to protecting your furry family members from harm.
Be mindful of essential oils when using pet aromatherapy candles. Some essential oils are toxic to both cats and dogs. A good rule of thumb is to not use anything in your household with any citrus-based scent. This is especially true for cats as they have a much more sensitive sense of smell than dogs do.
1. Petroleumbased Waxes: These waxes contain particles that can release toxic fumes when burned.
2. Lead-Based Wicks: Many older candles contain lead wicks, which can be incredibly dangerous if ingested by pets.
3. Synthetic Fragrances: These fragrances are made with toxic chemicals that may be hazardous to your pup’s health.
4. Synthetic Colours: While they may be attractive, these synthetic colours are highly toxic and should be avoided if possible.
You will find that most of the time candles that fit this criterion are more expensive than they toxic counterparts. This is especially true of 100% beeswax candles which are my favorite to use. These types of candles do not use any petroleum sludge which brings down the cost of the traditional candles.
You don’t have to worry if a candle is ingested by your pup. Fortunately, in most cases, candles are harmless and won’t make them ill.
While commonly used candle waxes such as soy, paraffin, and beeswax are generally non-toxic, they can still be dangerous to dogs if ingested. Of these three types of wax, soy is the safest option with minimal risk factors associated with it. Additionally, essential oils present in some candles may pose a danger to pets but typically contain concentrations that won’t negatively affect them.
Depending on the severity of the burn, veterinary care may be needed right away. If the burn is minor, you can rinse it with cool water for 10-15 minutes and then apply a topical antibiotic ointment over the affected area.
In conclusion, candles are not necessarily bad for dogs as long as you take the proper precautions and use safe ingredients. Choose non-toxic candles that are made with natural essential oils, beeswax or other plant/vegetable waxes and a cotton or paper wick.
