How to Prevent and Fix a Short Candle Wick

Candle tunneling is a common problem that occurs when the wax fails to melt evenly, causing an undesirable tunneling effect within the candle. This typically happens when there isn’t enough fragrance oil or dye in the wax mixture or if you use too cold of a wick. It can also be caused by improper pouring technique or inadequate ventilation.
Many people mistakenly think that tunneling only happens with cheaper candles, but this is false. Even the most expensive candles tunnel, so the price isn’t always a key factor.
Ideally, larger candles should have thicker wicks and smaller candles should have thinner wicks. However, sometimes candlemakers use small wicks for larger candles, which causes tunneling. Smaller wicks cannot generate enough heat to melt the surface evenly, so they cause wax build-up in the middle of the candle instead of an even burn.
Other reasons why tunneling might occur include:
– Not enough fragrance oil or dye in the wax mixture. This can cause the wax to cool too quickly and form an uneven burn pattern.
– Using a wick that is too cold. Generally, wicks should be at least room temperature when you pour the candle into the jar.
If your candle has tunneled, there are a few things you can do to fix it. The easiest solution is to relight the wick and keep an eye on it until the wax melts evenly. If that doesn’t work, then try these tips:
– Trim the wick down to 1/4 inch before each lighting.

Not everyone has access to candlemaking equipment so to be sure you can fix this without buying extra materials we recommend either using aluminum foil or a candle topper to fix candle tunneling at home.
Another way to prevent candle tunneling is by using an aluminum foil collar. To do this, take some aluminum foil and wrap it snuggly around the outside edge of your candle so that it completely covers the tunneled wax. Be sure to leave an open center though, so the flame can keep burning as normal. The aluminum foil allows the flame to evenly radiate heat; plus, the foil also helps preserve heat to better melt any left-over wax.
If you want a more permanent solution to candle tunneling, then you can buy a candle topper. Candle toppers are made specifically for preventing wax tunneling and they come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Most of them attach directly onto the top of your candle jar with adhesive or magnets so they stay secure while you burn it.
The best way to prevent tunneling when you are burning your candles is by following the instructions that come with it. You should always trim the wick to 1/4 inch before each lighting and make sure your candle is placed in a well-ventilated area, away from drafty windows or vents.
You also want to make sure you are burning your candle for at least 2-3 hours at a time, as this will help prevent wax from building up around the edges. Lastly, if possible avoid moving your candles around when they are hot, and never leave them unattended.
